Why guesthouses beat big hotels for provincial travel
Community, price and authenticity — three reasons travellers keep going local.
Papua New Guinea's provinces aren't hotel country. Outside of Port Moresby, Lae and a handful of resort towns, the best stays are family-run guesthouses — and there are three reasons why.
1. Community access
A guesthouse owner introduces you to the village, arranges the boat, calls the driver, and knows which market day is best. A hotel receptionist gives you a brochure.
2. Price honesty
PGK 200–350 typically covers a clean room, a home-cooked meal and airport pickup at a provincial guesthouse. The same money at a chain hotel might get you a room and nothing else.
3. Real PNG hospitality
Wantoks matter here. Staying at a guesthouse means eating with the family, learning a few Tok Pisin phrases and hearing stories you'd never get in a lobby.
