PNG's coastline is one of the most under-visited in the Pacific. Three destinations stand out for first-timers: Tufi's tropical fjords, Madang's reef-and-rainforest combo, and Kokopo's volcanoes and WWII history.
Tufi: the fjord country
Tufi's rias (drowned river valleys) create dramatic fjord-like coastlines with world-class shore diving. The dive resort is the anchor property, but community guesthouses along the coast offer authentic village stays.
Madang: 'the prettiest town in the Pacific'
Madang balances easy diving, cultural tours and comfortable town amenities. Base yourself in a waterfront resort or a mid-town guesthouse and day-trip to Kranket Island, Bilbil Village and the Coastwatchers Memorial.
Kokopo: volcanoes & history
Kokopo replaced Rabaul as East New Britain's capital after the 1994 volcanic eruption. Today it's a base for exploring active volcanoes, Japanese WWII tunnels and some of PNG's best snorkelling. Kokopo Beach Bungalow-style properties are plentiful and well-priced.
Getting there
All three destinations are reached by Air Niugini domestic flights from Port Moresby. Book 4–6 weeks ahead — coastal flights fill up fast around school holidays.
