Where to stay when arriving in Port Moresby
A local's guide to the safest, most convenient suburbs for first-time visitors — from Boroko to Waigani.
Port Moresby is the gateway to Papua New Guinea for almost every international traveller. Where you sleep on that first night matters — it shapes how easily you get around, how safe you feel, and how quickly you can transition to a domestic flight or a meeting in the CBD.
Airport-side: Seven Mile & Six Mile
If you land late or fly out early the next morning, stay within 10 minutes of Jacksons International Airport. Motels along Wards Road and near Six Mile handle transfers directly and are the easiest 'grab and go' option for transiting travellers.
Boroko & Gordons: mid-town convenience
Boroko and Gordons sit between the airport and the CBD, close to supermarkets, banks and pharmacies. Ideal for stays of 2–5 nights when you need to run errands, top up SIM cards or visit government offices.
Waigani: government & business district
Waigani is home to embassies, parliament and most head offices. Guesthouses and serviced apartments here are the pick for business travellers or NGOs on longer engagements.
Downtown / Ela Beach: the waterfront
For a shorter walk to the harbour, APEC Haus and Ela Beach, downtown hotels offer the most scenic setting. Prices are higher, but the views and weekend markets are worth it.
