The quick reality
PNG's currency is the kina (PGK). Cash matters far more here than in most destinations.
Card acceptance is largely limited to hotels, resorts and larger businesses in main centres.
Outside towns, assume cash only — and assume no ATM.
What you should know
Practicalities
- ATMs exist in main centres but can be out of service or out of cash.
- International cards may be declined without a travel notification to your bank.
- Small denominations are essential for markets, transport, tips and village arrangements.
Security
- Withdraw inside a bank, hotel or shopping centre rather than on the street, and not at night.
- Do not carry a large single bundle of cash or count money in public.
- Keep a reserve separate from your wallet.
What this means for a traveller
- Plan your cash for the whole trip before you leave a main centre.
- Budget in kina for local spending even if your package is quoted in USD.
- Do not rely on being able to top up your cash in a remote area.
What I recommend
- Tell your bank you are travelling, and bring more than one card.
- Draw cash in main centres and keep it in small notes.
- Ask your host in advance what the destination accepts — resorts often take cards, villages do not.
HausLink approach
- We intend to state clearly what each destination accepts and what you should carry in cash, so travellers are not caught short.
Verify before you travel
Check current exchange rates, card acceptance and any cash-limit or declaration rules with your bank and official sources before travel.
