The Realities in PNG

Roads, Transport & Domestic Flights

PNG runs on aircraft and boats as much as roads — and schedules move.

The quick reality

There is no national road network linking the whole country. Many places are reachable only by air or sea.

Domestic flights are central to travel here, and delays, changes and cancellations are normal rather than exceptional.

Road quality ranges from sealed urban roads to routes that need a 4WD and local knowledge.

What you should know

Flights

  • Weather, aircraft availability and operational changes all affect schedules, especially into smaller airstrips.
  • Baggage allowances on smaller aircraft can be tight and strictly applied.
  • A single missed connection can cost you a day or more, because alternatives may not run daily.

Roads

  • Landslides, flooding and washouts close routes, particularly in the Highlands and in the wet season.
  • Night driving between towns is not advisable.
  • Self-drive is not how we would recommend a first-time visitor moves around.

Boats

  • Island and coastal travel depends on sea conditions and can be postponed at short notice.
  • Check that a vessel carries life jackets and that the operator is reputable.

What this means for a traveller

  • Build buffer days into your itinerary, especially before your international departure.
  • Do not book a same-day connection between a remote airstrip and an international flight.
  • Keep essentials, medication and a change of clothes in your carry-on.

What I recommend

  • Give yourself at least one buffer night in a major centre before flying home.
  • Travel light and keep your documents, medication and electronics with you.
  • Use arranged transport rather than public vehicles, especially in urban areas and after dark.
  • Expect at least one schedule change on a multi-leg PNG itinerary, and plan so it is an inconvenience rather than a disaster.

HausLink approach

  • We intend to build itineraries with realistic connection times and buffer nights, and to coordinate transfers rather than leave travellers to improvise on arrival.

Verify before you travel

Confirm domestic flight schedules and baggage rules directly with the operating airline close to travel — schedules change.
