The quick reality
Advanced medical care in PNG is concentrated in a small number of centres. Outside those, capability can be very limited.
A destination can be peaceful and beautiful and still carry serious travel risk because medical care, communications and evacuation options are limited.
This is the part of a PNG trip most travellers under-prepare for.
Travel insurance with medical evacuation
HausLink strongly recommends comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, for international visitors travelling beyond major centres.
What you should know
What capability looks like
- Larger centres have the most capable facilities, including private options.
- Provincial and district facilities vary widely, and supplies or specialist staff may not be available when you need them.
- In remote areas, treatment may mean stabilisation and then transport — not on-site care.
Evacuation reality
- Medical evacuation depends on weather, daylight, aircraft availability and ground logistics.
- It is expensive, and providers generally need confirmed payment or valid insurance cover.
- Distance and terrain mean help can take hours, not minutes.
Everyday health
- Bring your own medication in sufficient quantity, in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription.
- Do not assume a pharmacy will stock what you use.
- Discuss malaria and other tropical precautions with a travel doctor before you come.
What this means for a traveller
- Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover is not optional for PNG travel beyond major centres — treat it as part of the ticket price.
- Your itinerary choice is also a medical decision. Very remote, expedition-style travel increases the time between an incident and real care.
- If you have a significant existing condition, get medical advice specifically about remote travel before booking.
What I recommend
- Buy comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, and carry the policy number and 24-hour assistance details with you.
- Travel with a decent personal medical kit and any prescriptions you depend on.
- Tell your host or operator about relevant conditions, allergies and medication before arrival — not afterwards.
- For remote destinations, ask us directly what the nearest medical capability and realistic evacuation path is before you commit.
HausLink approach
- We publish the medical reality of each destination rather than hiding it, and we intend to make coordination and preparation part of trip planning.
- HausLink coordinates only. We do not provide medical care, ambulance, medevac or insurance, and we do not guarantee any outcome in an emergency.
Verify before you travel
Confirm vaccination and malaria advice with a travel health professional, and confirm what your insurance actually covers in PNG — including remote areas and evacuation — in writing before departure.
